The main purpose of the symposium was to bring together renowned specialists of contact mechanics in orger to draw a representative picture of the state of the art in 1992. To a large extent, this goal has been reached and is materialized in the present proceedings. Indeed, this volume contains a selection of review articles and a series of advanced topics articles which form a whole and represent recent progresses accomplished in the field, both from a theoretical and a numerical standpoint.

Souvent abordés de manière disciplinaire, les problèmes de frottement font rapidement apparaître des couplages qui rendent nécessaires des approches pluridisciplinaires. Thématique ouverte à toute la communauté des chercheurs en tribologie, qu'elle soit universitaire ou industrielle, qu'il s'agisse d'approches expérimentales, théoriques ou numériques.
